-Taj Mahal is officially a new wonder of the world.
and why shouldn't it be - especially in a country with an estimated population of 1.12 billion its not difficult to get 90 million votes is it? (and of course now that Internet is a household name-mass mails from all age groups- kids to senior citizens- orkut seems to be every ones game and tagging is something that floods all our mailboxes!)
I am thinking it should have been many many more votes - assuming that one can vote a zillion times.
just a question: would we make it if we werent such a huge population spread all over the world and internet access was not as easily accessible?
Well after all this hoo-haa of being in the Seven wonders of the World- does the Taj MAhal really deserve to be there? or lets put it this way - do we Indians(alive today) really deserve that?
-I am sure several of the people who voted will probably be the first to go to the Taj and etch on the Marble - "i voted for the Taj" and of course the 'hearts and arrows. the littering, the marble turning yellow every passing day, the dirt that flows in the river...
why don't they have a clause in the contest which states:
the seven wonders of the world can be subjected to deletion if not taken proper care of!
or bettern still transfer those 90 odd million votes to a drive that works towards conserving all of our built historic past.
i am sure the 90 million votes would have come down to 9000. cos we all know how poor we are at conserving anything in India.
I am happy that Taj Mahal is listed - and why not - India has a great architectural heritage- and many many more historic wonders like the Taj - but its a shame as to how we maintain them - conservation is merely an act of plastering and cementing without any thought if at all.
We, the people who could be our nation's greatest asset turn out to be the greatest thrashers of our heritage.
so congratulations to all of us - our symbol of love did finds a place in the Seven Wonders of the World!
Lets just hope that this will atleast motivate us to take care of our past in order to be noticed!

what is most disconcerting is that voices can barely be heard above the honking that goes on the streets. in this country too, things don't change rapidly but there is such a strong forum and the pervasiveness of media makes things audible everywhere

i think there is a strong pervasiveness of media in India too - but i have my own feelings abt 'media' in general -
in US or in India - they always seems to make those things strongly audible that sell - like paris hilton here. the voices that tries to make a few hard realities audible are often lone voices with a column in the newspaper
