Four fruitful days… or foodfull days... or work”full” days…
n a dead city…
aim: reviving the dead city:
the Detroit design charrette… 21st -24th jan 05
and the people dedicated to this aim:
5 architects (the smarter lot) 4 urban planners( uhhh!!!) 2 urban designers(hmm.. confused souls?) 2 landscape architects( don’t really care) 1 business school student( all talk?) in 3 professional members… surely quite a team and a great learning experience…
Especially under Michael Sorkins... he is soooooooo good!!!!
Sadly this blog has been lying in the drafts since week now ,… n all the high and excitement seems to have died down…
All in all just to mark these four days in my memory as an experience filled with lots of interesting work… loads of yummm food… they just kept on feeding us with rich sinful food for four days… horribleee weather… a rare opportunity to work with great people!!!
A blog about 'everything else' - sometimes cryptic, other times factual, at times inspirational, many times informative and occasionally personal! But always revolving around things I enjoy the most: design, art, culture, travel, photography, urbanism, sustainability, architecture, food!!!

ME
Lost in a crowd
Which in reality doesnt not exist
Yet, not a vaccum...
a few familiar faces...
few moments of happiness..
moments of exile...
can i call them my own?
Looking back...craving for the world i left behind...
that I can call mine
with the hope that it shall be mine through eternity...
Drowned in this 'spectacle' I have created for myself!!!
...in this quest for a new identity and identification!!!
As I stand, deeply integrated in the milieu...
Yet, experiencing the disconection .. of being a spectator in my own realm.
..................................
A lone obsservor ...a lone participant... to the act of my own life...
an experience of my own specatacle I have shared with none but the spectator that I call myself.

Philip Johnson
architect philip johnson... my first understanding and inspiration as an architectural student... dies today...at 98

surely the first inspiration for the basis of my philosophies and basic understanding of the subject... even today he stood as "the architect" to me who carried forward the modernist icon succesfully into the post-modernist era...
... his work shall always be etched into my memory...

Questioning context…
Of late the importance of context has been pondering over my mind… be it as a way of life; a set of people; an architectural expression… yes I do avoid writing on architecture on my blog but I think this would be a more generalized interpretation of the term.
In my undergraduate days.. the times when I was well rooted in to a certain set of surroundings… assured of an absolute existence in and around that precinct… context meant only in terms of contextualizing my architecture in terms of site place people culture and all the other assumptions and understanding we base our architecture on. But today having completely shaken from the “rooted existence” that I led Context probably stands out as the only relevant means of identification, understanding and relation.
Why is it that we miss rather relate to people most only in the context of the situations we shared with them or the places we co-existed in? Suddenly meeting an individual who is an integral part of your life in a different part of the world at an absolutely different time and place shakes the foundation on which u believe u have known that person…
When we so strongly talk about extending culture into our architecture isn’t it absolutely contextual to the culture of that time and place? Recreating 18th century statement amidst a contemporary urban society puts it out of context of it time and place… or trying to reinforce an urban condition in a predominantly rural set up puts its out of place.
However with globalization taking its toll on the world and architects like Peter Eisemen and Zaha Hadid becoming an inspiration for students be they positioned anywhere in the world the “contextualisation” of architecture though claimed to be existent is blurring across the globe… yet a contemporary architecture of its place though built on theories of its time becomes successful only when it actually roots itself to the context of the place; people and existing culture of the set-up it is serving.
Why does it happen that when u r existing in two different worlds at the same time they both begin to exist as parallel worlds not intersecting in their paths… a co-existence of the two worlds at any point of time places the other out of context.
Education… culture... art… existence… society… people… places… architecture.. all fall in place only in context?

All that is solid melts in the air...
yes.. i borrowed the title from a reading of my theory class..
(on modernism and post modernity)...
but it so aptly fits the weather in ann arbor since the past couple of days... every morning for the past two weeks now i hv been so used to gettin up to this blanket of snow in the courtyard behind my house tht this morning waking up to an actual real green lawn was surely a pleasant surprise... since yestreday surprisingly the lil cozy yet collddd town town has beenall misty and foggy and realtively warm .. reminded me of one the places u go to for a nice holiday..well tht surely implies my desire to not work .... n today its this lovely rainy day... when all the white has been replaced by the green underneath ... feels like a hill station... i guess this is gonna be the warmest day for the season... gonna try breathe as much into it... before the white wraps the place all over again!!!

on my stint at baking...
i baked my first consitent and prefect cake yesterday.. to most people it probably isnt as much as a high to me right now... but surely makes me feel really happy cos it turned out jsut the way i imagined it to be... a nice rich butter cake ... goooooeeyyy... n soft... hey advait remember the amont of time weh ave spent discussing tht part of cakes... n how the only cake shop in bombay which satisfied our tastebuds happends to be oven fresh.. thou u always vouched for the cakes from croissants too... i dont totally disagree thou..
as i write this blog i am actually getting back to thoe lil things which gave me a high and always waned to pen em down..had lost it for quite some time now...

Swades
Swades.. An Ashutosh Gowarikar film.. Full marks to him for choosing a topic which wont really appeal to the masses and goin ahead and making a heart felt film... n he surely felt sooooooo much for it that our man goes overboard n makes a four hour film… and as per what I heard this is what happened to the film post editing.. the casting falls in place with Shahrukh for the first time not doing his “ overacting” bit… u know every time there is an emotional scene u can actually feel as thou the director is pulling back SRK so that he remains as “ Mohan Bhargav- the character” and not “Shahraukh Khan” the person… Gayatri Joshi… my senior from school... well u can easily tell its her first film.. To the extent that she seems nervous at places with Shahrukh’s presence in the scene. The movie builds up well in the beginning … grips u till the first bit at NASA… shahrukh’s entry into India... till the first song and till the time there are few instances of the rural India and its issues.. and then…. There is just toooo much of the emotional crap.. too much of the mush.. too many songs… this is when I found it really hard to keep my eyes open I SLEPT THROUGH PART OF THE MOVIE… and woah when I wake up.. mr. Shahrukh has successfully generated electricity in the village.. I even forgot the name already!!!! Well that bit reminded me of the treatment given to lagaan... the plot revolves around a similar concept till then.. a heroic act… with one single individual standing out to achieve that bit.. Among several.. literally several other individuals… standing there waiting to taste the success of that heroic act… n then the story turns when mr. Shahrukh has to go back to NASA… to me the movie got back its grip and sensibility at that point (or probably I was done with my nap) .. His dilemma of returning back to his own country. .with a sensible plan of action and not just settling into the village.. the snapshots of India running thru his mind… his moments of success at NASA.. his urge to do his bit for his homeland.. All justified in that last bit!!!
All in all the message is simple, valid, sensible and true: n it comes across the best in a dialogue by the charater called “ melaram.. or did I get that wrong” … is when he says: “why use our own prowess to the benefit of some neighbors land?”
I was wondering as to why this movie didn’t generate that bit of a patriotic feeling like its contemporaries with the same mission.. The reason probably being its very difficult to generate a patriotic feeling from a current problem.. a crisis situation which as no two sides…but the enemy lies in the problem itself!!! That’s where inspite of the film being long with unnecessary songs I believe its successful in its attempt to sensitize!!
Ashutosh Gowarikar’s treatment is very similar to Lagaan.. Reflects absolute class and surely loads of talent on part of the Director way superior to his contemporaries.. But one more film with the same treatment and am sure no takers for the film.
Surely worth a watch… but remember I slept through bits of the film.. So probably the length seemed shorter to me

my disappearing act
ON my flight to India… my mind is this mad rush of thoughts. all piling on a the same time.. leading me to this dying urge to write.. n what when I have been away from my blog for over two weeks now.. I guess my lil blog does deserve a nice big post as a recap to whts happening with my life and where the hell had I disappeared since my last post….
After the thanskigving break this is how life has been split up into:
1. Beginning December and al the final reviews and assignment and submissions and presentations began to surface leaving me almost underground drowned into the act of completing my work….
2.However when I mention the beginning of this month it ll be really really unfair if I don’t speak about “ the December 4th party” a lot happened over this weekend… the party rocked to the core.. and people soaring away to glory with some awesome music and the icing on the cake being the two lady cops who walked in “supposedly” at 4 m…where was I at this time? Hmmm…. I really don’t remember!!!!
3. Life seemed like a mess in the the coming week and all i wanted to do is run away… but I guess learnt my lesson the hard way, This month has been to me an absolute test of learning to hang in there.. Hang in and fight every situation to its minutest detail… be it work. Be it something else.. I already feel tougher
4 . Now it somehow seemed like all the party sharty for the semester was finally over as all of us were so immersed in meeting deadlines studying for exams and working on reviews… but the best part of the month… when the hard work pays off…
Decmber 17th : my first final review at the U of M… all my classmates had made it sound n rightly so as quite a big deal… wht with people workin day in n day out like maniacs on their desks in the studio.. n some great people being invited form all over the country for these reviews and the competition element floating around the studio… The review went really well… n I was myself shocked at the no of compliments and positive critique I got towards my work.. .especially form the profs… but the best part of the story .. being short listed for the competition …. 14 projects out of 90.. not a bad deal!!! The results r out n I didn’t win .. .but yes apparently my project got a special mention from the jurors.. guess have to suffice with that as of now…
4. So did I say that dec 4th was the last party? We all go into our party shoes once agn after my review thing happened n “ricks” time it was./.. prob the last time with single Sid… n of course I missed the party on the prev night at Nectos ..when everyone went leaving me alone to do my model for studio.. guess that payed off well thou.!!! But me n cribbing have to go hand in hand right?
5. Work however didn’t stop taking its toll on me .. infact all it did was made me panic all the more as I realised that I still had loads to finish even the day I left for India… All this never really let me realize that I was actually going to India….
In the middle of this packeddddddd Decemeber month … certain aspects of life have surfaced as answers n question marks… once of them would be “ friendship” Who is ur best friend? A childhood friend whom u speak to now once in 6 months? Or is the term relative to the circumstances? At this point of time I know my friends whom I left behind shall always be there and the good times shall roll forever but then there is new aspect of friendship which I had never experienced… it’s a beautiful pristine feeling… n am glad I felt it!!!
As I sit in this flight n think about wht alllllllllll I am gonna do in India the thoughts just don’t stop… there is so much I want to do n it has suddenly or rather I ll say finally sunk in that I am GOIN TO INDIAAAA….aah my laptop bat is lowwwww!!!!
When I came here 4 months ago the feeling I had in the flight was I am leaving my wholeeeeeee world behind n going to an alien nation that, I had assumed shall have nothing to offer me in terms of relationships and people.. I was so sure it was a disconnected act which I was to indulge into for two yrs.. devoid of emotions what so ever. N I have proved myself wrong .It has been a learning experience in terms of feeling towards people who mean in terms of a relationship just friends but I know shall always be there.. whenever the need be.
Today as I sit here the feeling is not of going back the only world I have that I left behind but it’s a feeling of going from one world of mine to another .. I know that this time I shall have something to come bk to and not feel on my journey bk home as thou am sinkin into the black hole.
Ok now my comp is draining out … gtg…

cant find a heading for this one
its almost a week since my last post i guess... have too much work on my mind n would probably want to write abt how bugged am about it right now... but as a continuation to my previous blog it wouldnt be fair to the second half of the boston trip if i dont write about it...well the second day meant a lazzy start and finally gettin out of the house to go shopping in wrentham village mall for the thanksgiving sale at around 2pm... well shopping makes me happy.. but i didnt shop much... n i am not lyingggg. the evening was walking around boston downtown.. what intriques me most though is walkin down the same streets by night and see an absolute morphosis of activity ;character ; people n mood ... a transformed realm with the lights taking over as th most powerful element in the landscape making it almost diffuclt to function with out them... ok the next step of the trip meant "goin to partyyy" .. what fun!!! ... i shall leave that part of the story to this much only...
finally saturday morning n we went on this walkin historic trail of the city.. that was fun... i mean the best way to grasp and absorb the city!!! so much of walking n what better way to compensate for it with some awesome food at cheesecake factory n even more sinful..yummm strawberry cheese cake to eat and two more to go for the drive back to ann arbor... greedy souls that we are!!!
finally we got ourselves to push our butts out of the city at 930 pm... for another fun drive back to ann arbor.. n the song of the trip officially " fana" ..that song is absolute energy!!! i feel its been a great come back from a.r.rehman when he was jsut abt gettin monotonous.... the whole of yuva album for tht matter... its grown on me oveer time n has a lot of "re-value"!!!
ok now back to work.. just had my pre final review yesterday... the largest dose of crtique for me uptill now for this semester.. hope i come out out good out of this though for the final one..today - a final submission of " chair" for representation class... a bubble wrap chair....was fun!!!
just two more weeks of this semster to go.. cant belive its actually gone by so fast n we are practically at the end...

Boston
ok... 26 hours in boston... a day well spent.. finally i met shweta n vikram... was so happy to see em... am so glad that somethings never change!!!
the drive to boston was great fun... "lotsa fun n lil sleep".. but chinar n monto shall beg to differ on the sleep part.. for my part of the story..since chianr had a version of his own. we left annarbor at 8 pm..all geared up n slightly skeptical abt the weather.. n then clicked our first snap.. all smilessss... monto drove till abt 130... we halted at around 10 for food.. in ohio... then hit the road again..the weather had cleared really well by then..no snow n very lil rain.. n awesome music to keep us going... thanks to monto's ipod!!! n my CDS... china clay took a nap from 10 -1:30 ..while i was awake givin monto company.... so how many hours of sleep for chinar does that make already? at 1;30 china clay took the drivers seat.. n monto promised that he can keep china company for a couple of hours till i take a nap... but then.. well i tried hard but fell asleep.. n monto tugged in cozily in the back seat with all the jackets n pilllow to keep him warm took to sleep... so poor chinar.. n am really feeling horrbiel now for having dozed of sitting right next ot the drviers seat..but wht with not havin slept for 4 prev nights in a row ..jsut couldnt keep my eyes open.
once again we stopped for coffee at 530.. .monto took the wheel.. n then chinar went back to sleep.. .. the drive was great.... dawn happened around 7 ... lovelyyyyy!!!
n then at 830 chinar came back to drive ... so now how much did chinar sleep? why am i feeling guilty? we hit boston around 9am. finding shwetas hosue wasnt a tough task...it jsut got spic"ier" with chianr getttin into a one way n then we scurring out through the rain sheepishly looking around n hopin that the cops dont catch us.. but thanks to thanksgivign the city was dead...
then i met shwetaa... what fun!!! ... ya monto... good fun!!!
the weather ws really good..cna u belive it 60F... on nov 25th ? n so mr. vikram gets all excited n makes us walk for miles.. but that was good..we walked through copleys square .... n around.. this city is a gret blend between the old and the "modern" .. n even the post modern.. i was quite amwzed with the fact that stnading at one poitn of the road i could actually see a combination of renaissance( or gothic? am confused).. pure modern architecture( brutalist.. i lvoed it but all these guys were like eeeks!!!!) n then there was the post modern lot... standing tall in your face..some respecting geometry..some defying it!!! ..well i would surelyyy vote for the latter!!!
the nwe walked around the place.. u know the city was dead due to thanksgiving.. guess everyone was back to their families... so i dont know if i am in position to say that i grasped the character of the city..yes i did of the architectural vocabulary but not of the city and its people... the public spaces were there ...but with no life... n whts the city without its people? today probably we shall see the "alive" city...
n thn we went to an indian place for lunch..called bhindi bazzaar..since everything was shut. as i write this i feel like having thai food so adly!!!wonder why!!!had good food
... batata wada... after 4 months.. it was actually nice.. n then we had the usual moghlai khana.. n then sooooo full again got ourselves to walk to shwetas place to pick up the car...
ok 3pm n we head out to see MIT... ahmmmmmmm... it was great to step in to the campus of one of the most revered institutions in this world.. well i was feelin elated but not as much i thought i would be...
the next stop was Harvard.. 5pm.. n it was pitch dark!!! n raining..yucky!!! so much for praising the weather being relly pleasant all day.. the harvard campus was dead... wet n dark..couldnt see much ..shweta was sure the harvard square would be bustling with acitivity n we could get to see some thign..but yet again..thanksgivin time ..the streets were empty.. but we had fun... walked back to the car in the rain n then monto chinar n i were soooooooooooo sleeeeeeeeeeeppyy.. went to viks house n crashed for three horus... waking up in time to go out once again...
Vik made some yum dal rice.. finally i agree that he can cook.. n then we went to ths place called "jillions" ... played a game of bowling..damn i wa s so bad at it!!!
n settled down in a nice lounge there for a few drinks..just a couple!!! i was 2 am by the time we head back home.. oh i forgot to add that while we were out bowling n chilling wwe got several calls from our "dear" friends in ann arbr..who were in an absolute " happy " state.. i coudlnt gatehr as to what anyone was saying except sids remark of missin us.. hahaha..maybe i wanted to remeber only that one..well i can see sid frowning at me as he read this!!!
well it was 5 am by the time i actually went to sleep.. n now its time for another day in boston.. shll write more abt it.. but i promise that wont make it so explicit cos i wonder who actually is gonna reach the end of this blog ... its become unexpectedly longggggggggggggggggggggggg
the drive to boston was great fun...

SNOWWWWWWW
am sure each of my friends who blog or have any inclination to pen down anything at all n are here in the AA.. or that part of the US where it snows must have written a similar thing... MY FIRST SNOWW.... hahah feels like am back to kg writign an essay " on my first blah blah blah"
ok so finally it snowed..the thing i dreaded the most and looked forward to the most has finally happened... i got the taste of my first snow while on my way back from school... n guess wht was the first thign which ran through m mind or rather wht the firs experience was.. me as my sual clumsy self scattering away to glory ... as usual in a hurry .. running late for something walked out of my college building .. oops rushed out of my college building..just to get jolted by the slippery after effect on the road of the snow... thank god that i was a little carefull than i generally am.... n most people who r reading this shall be like " careful n komal? doesnt go!!!" .. comin back on track .. for once i didnt actually trip but just about managed to gather myself.. n be on my toes...
hope am not speakin too soon n actually trip just the next time i get into the snow.
why on earth am i blogging about me tripping on snow? my clumsiness is gettin to my writing too is it?

a conversation!!!
hey people...
finally got my blog space... well i almost did last wednesday at 3 am when i was struggling with myself ... one part of me which so wanted to work on my presentation and the other half dying to go to bed n crash...well the former took over and so also postponed writing this blog. but u know i am glad it did... cos today is the 21st of Nov and its exactly three months that I left " home" ... hmmm ... for another home? if its was september i would say " no way is this my home" ; october would be ... hmm!!! well !! i t not bad here!!! ... come november n i can finally say " i love it here tooooo!!!!"
three months... long time? lookin back they just seemed to have flown away n it feel like yesterday when i went through what seemed like several goodbyes!!!
n post these goodbyes on my flight to this place all i felt was this feeling of being driven into the blackhole with not even a streak of light to look upto... I was so wrong...slowly as life beings to unfold and clarity begins to seep in to show me the path i so seemed to have had lost somewhere several streaks of light have opend new doors... new realms...
but am sure like what a real good friend of mine here told me last night... when am on my flight back home from India this time in January getting back to AA it wont be the same "dark" feeling.. wht probably would keep me goin is " am back to my other home... in AA"
